What Is the Skin Barrier?
Your skin barrier is the outermost layer of skin that keeps moisture in and irritants out.
Think of it as a brick wall. Skin cells are the bricks. The lipids, the natural fats your skin produces, are the mortar. When the wall is intact, moisture stays in. Your skin looks even, feels comfortable, and holds its fullness.
When the mortar thins, water escapes. Irritants get through. Skin feels tight, looks dull, and starts reacting to things it never used to bother you.
That is not a mystery. That is your skin barrier telling you it needs support.
Why the Skin Barrier Weakens After 50
As we get older, our skin produces fewer natural lipids. The wall gets gaps.
This happens for a few reasons. Estrogen plays a major role in keeping skin thick, hydrated, and resilient. As estrogen declines after menopause, so does the skin's ability to hold moisture and produce the lipids that form that protective layer. Skin cell turnover also slows, which means the barrier is not renewing itself the way it once did.
The result is skin that feels drier, more sensitive, and more reactive, even if you have never had sensitive skin before.
This is not your skin failing you. It is your skin changing. And it means your skin needs more support than it used to.
What Actually Helps
The most effective approach is simple: replenish what your skin is no longer making on its own.
Here are the ingredients worth knowing:
Squalane is one of the most important. Your skin naturally produces squalane as part of its lipid layer but production drops significantly after 30 and continues declining. Squalane from plant sources (we use sugarcane derived) mimics your skin's own oils exactly. It absorbs without greasiness, locks in moisture, and signals to your skin that its barrier is supported.
Rosehip oil is rich in essential fatty acids, the building blocks of the lipid layer your skin needs more of. It also supports cell renewal, which slows with age. Used consistently, it helps skin look more even, more luminous, and more like itself.
Bakuchiol is a plant based alternative to retinol, derived from the babchi plant. It supports cell turnover and collagen production without the irritation that retinol often causes for mature or sensitive skin. If you have tried retinol and found it too harsh, bakuchiol is worth knowing about.
Plum oil and carrot seed oil round out a barrier supportive routine. Plum oil is exceptionally light and high in oleic acid. Carrot seed oil is rich in beta carotene, which the skin uses to repair and protect.
